Effects of Supplement Type and Feeding Frequency on Performance and Physiological Responses of Yearling Brahman-Crossbred Steers

چکیده
The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of supplement type and feeding frequency on performance, voluntary forage intake, and physiological responses of yearling beef steers. Twenty-four Brahman x British steers were stratified by initial body weight (BW) and randomly allocated to 12 pens (two steers/pen). Pens were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: 1) molasses-based supplement offered three times/wk (ML), 2) citrus pulp-based supplement offered three times/wk (CT), or 3) citrus pulpbased supplement offered daily (CD). Forage intake did not differ between treatments, however, CD-fed steers had a decreased oscillation in daily forage intake compared to CT and ML. Steers offered a CD had greater BW gain compared to steers offered CT and ML, however, these results were not reflected by the blood hormones and metabolites usually associated with animal performance. In this study, daily supplementation of yearling steers with citrus pulp-based supplements increased BW gain without impacting forage intake compared to the same supplement offered three times/wk, or compared to an iso-caloric and isonitrogenous supplement based on liquid molasses also fed three times/wk.

Effects of Supplement Type on Performance, Reproductive, and Physiological Responses of Brahman-Crossbred Heifers
The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of supplement type on performance, reproductive, and physiological responses of grazing yearling beef heifers. Sixty Brahman x British crossbred heifers were stratified by initial body weight (BW) and age, and randomly allocated to 12 pens (five heifers/pen). Pens were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: 1) molasses-based su...
متن کاملEffects of ractopamine supplementation on growth performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot steers differing in biological type.
Effects of ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) supplementation on growth performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot steers differing in biological type were investigated using British, Continental crossbred, and Brahman crossbred calf-fed steers (n = 420). Steers of each type were weighed at reimplantation [British, mean BW = 375 kg (SD = 38 kg); Continental crossbred, mean BW = 379 kg (SD ...

The effects of winter supplement type on growth and pregnancy rate of fall-born, yearling heifers was investigated over 2 consecutive years. During both years, heifers were stratified by breed (Braford and Brangus-crossbred) and BW and randomly assigned to one of two treatments consisting of (1) wheat middling-based range cube, or (2) molasses-cottonseed meal slurry (n=34 and 24 heifers/treatme...
متن کاملUrea and(or) feather meal supplementation for yearling steers grazing limpograss (Hemarthria altissima var. 'Floralta') pasture.
The unique relationship between TDN and CP concentration (low CP relative to TDN) in the whole-plant of 'Floralta' limpograss (Hemarthria altissima) may provide an opportunity for improving cattle performance through protein supplementation. In each of three consecutive years, yearling Brahman x British crossbred steers (initial weight approximately 270 kg) grazed limpograss during the summer a...
